JJ72 - Camden Dingwalls, London
Fads are often thought to be the result of a bandwagon effect: one band with
talent comes out and thirty bands of formerly mediocre value miserably attempt
to emulate this sound with mostly pathetic results.
But thinking more pragmatically, fads can be a coincidence: a convergence of
tastes at a particular point in time.
And this is a classic example of such a case.
The natural order over the last decade of melancholy, beautiful sounding artists
may run from Jeff Buckley to Radiohead to Muse and finally to JJ72, but as
tonight proves, they act almost oblivious to their supposed lowly position in
the hierarchy. Which is precisely what every band should do.
Like Kurt Cobain, singer Mark Greaney is one of those (few) artists whose music
fits exactly with his voice. There’s no way that pouring your heart out,
swooping and soaring with every note of songs like "Undercover Angel"
can be feigned. Not for money, fame or anything other than the pure art of
music. The live arena has indeed brought out the best in JJ72; this
gut-wrenching emotion replaces the dreary moments on their forthcoming debut.
So, JJ72 are tipped for the top, but can they kick it? It seems like they’re
capable of it, although, unlike Muse, who can veer from guitar-shagging apoplexy
to sweet simplicity at the flick of a wrist, they are sometimes samey. With a
more varied set, JJ72 would border on poignant perfection.
